iTunes and Podcast in the Library

So, the question is, should we be using iTunes and Podcasts in our school libraries. Personally, I say yes we should. Music can be used to teach and learn almost any subject area and it is fun. The moment a teacher incorporates music into a lesson, the students are hooked. It is a great motivating factor. Students can listen to books and learn about different forms of music in the library by using iTunes and podcasts. As with anything else, this technology needs to be monitored and certain items should be restricted (especially for younger children). I feel it can open so many children's minds to new experiences and knowledge. It will be interesting to see how other librarians utilize this technology, what works and what doesn't work.

Hi Janine,

Having students create their own podcasts related to specific lessons/units of study would also be very motivating, affording them the opportunity to express themselves in their own unique ways. For example, if students are studying global warming, specific groups of students can be assigned to create a podcast related to different aspects of this topic: causes, effects, what individuals can do to alleviate this problem, what will occur if this problem is ignored, etc.

My husband school has done several lessons with the podcast. He stated the students were extremely responsive and motivated to the lesson.
The school also purchases them for each student with a partial grant and contribution from parents. Each student is given a letter one year prior to seventh grade concerning the cost.
I would need to see a lesson and learn more about the steps in using this in class, before I can attempt to incorporate it.
