Searching for Positive Information

So far in my quest for finding information on ebooks, I have not found any positive information. This weeks article stated all the reasons why they have not become successful. It did state that they needed to start on a smaller scale which is a start. I do agree that when I am reading a book for enjoyment I want to curl up in a comfortable spot and read. Bringing my laptop and trying to curl up with it just doesn't seem to work. I am still searching.

Janine,
In your post you said that you wanted to find some positive information about ebooks. I found a couple of articles that may work for you.

The first one is called "The Benefits and Advantages of Ebooks" by Ramon Sasson. It lists 18 adavantages of ebooks and I must say that they were very enlightening. For example, Sasson pointed out that one can carry a whole library of books on a CD or laptop computer. Imagine the potential of that. In addition to cataloging your books on LibraryThing, you could actually carry them around with you on your laptop!! I had never thought of that. This article can be found at http://www.successconsciousness.ebooks_benefits.htm. Check it out!

Thw next article, which I found through Educause (a great resource for articles on information technologies) also lists some positives about ebooks. The article is called, "Ebooks in UK Public Libraries: where we are now and the way ahead," and it can be found at http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/public/nsptg/e-books/. I really enjoyed the scope of this article and it lists 4 advantages of ebooks, including stock management and targeting specific groups of users.

Both of these articles gave me food for thought. I may have to rethink my stance on ebooks, in that, there is a place for them (in colleges maybe). I still think there is a bigger problem (interest in reading) in our schools and society, but ebooks may offer more than we first thought. Let me know what you think.

Hi Janine,

I agree with the author of the article you posted about why ebooks are unsuccessful. In addition, like Lena, I prefer to read a print book since I do not find it relaxing to sit in front of a computer to read. This is not to say that ebooks don't have a place in an educational setting. There are many such fine books online. Personally, however, I would only read an ebook if I could not locate the print version.
